                  Match Reports 2017/18

Sunday 8th October

St.Clere's 4 Canvey Island White 0  (U16 Cassel County Cup)

St.Clere's first County Cup game of the season was a home encounter with fellow Southend League opponents Canvey Island White.

The Orange began brightly and were unlucky to score early on as Pumfrett's shot hit the post and trickled along the goal line and hit the other post before being cleared. He almost hit the net again soon afterwards when his header hit the post. Canvey were beginning to gain confidence and stifled any St.Clere's pressure. The breakthrough finally came after 14 minutes when Pumfrett latched on to a loose clearance outside the area to arrow a shot into the top corner, within a blink of an eye. Canvey had the odd glimpse at goal but the defence stood strong and despite having the majority of possession St.Clere's could not add to their advantage before the break.

HT 1 - 0

The second half started just like the first with St.Clere's looking for more goals. Keeper Watson told me afterwards that he didn't have a shot in the second half which shows the momentum was always with St.Clere's. Canvey were finally broken again on 60 minutes when Causley finished and he grabbed his second 6 minutes later. The flood gates had opened as Canvey began to tire slightly and Pumfrett grabbed his second on 74 minutes , slotting home from close range

FT 4 - 0

A good second half and result in the end but St.Clere's struggled in the first half. We must be more clinical and use the width of the pitch more, if we are looking to make great strides in the Cup competitions this year. Next up it is Benfleet Bridges (A) on the 5th November. They are a local team strangely in the London Echo League Premier Division so should be a good test and one that we are capable of passing with flying colours if we perform to our abilities

Sunday 1st October

St.Clere's 3 Orsett Park Royals 3 (U16 Southend Premier Division)

After a successful pre-season St.Clere's finally opened their league campaign by facing local rivals OPR in their first league game. OPR had won both their opening games, so a tough encounter was anticipated.

The start was not good though as we were caught cold within the first minute as OPR scored. St.Clere's struggled to get into the game and keeper Watson made some outstanding saves to keep it at 1-0. Gradually the game became more even and St.Clere's equalised from a corner, when Pumfrett rose through a stack of defenders to nod home.

HT 1 - 1

The second half started just like the first when OPR retook the lead within the first minute after St.Clere's failed to clear the ball. Pumfrett was then upended in the oppositions' penalty area soon after and Newton slotted home the penalty confidently to equalise again. The game was pulsating with both teams were putting in 200% and both could have retaken the lead. OPR went ahead for the third time after a good save from Watson fell to the OPR player. St.Clere's would not give up though and a cross field ball found Holloway who slotted home to equalise for the third time.

FT 3- 3

A good solid start for the team but definitely some lessons learned and these will be worked upon during training before we start the County Cup adventure next week at home versus Canvey Island White
